To Stain & Mediated by Glass

by Lou Hazelwood

‘To Stain’, (http://www.louhazelwood.com/project/to-stain/) is a series of found and made negatives, changed and manipulated by various chemical processes, both natural processes and forced processes of alteration and deterioration. Adding colour to this process is a highlighting of some ‘age spots’ and in some ways looks to reverse recent common habits of immediately ageing & altering our digital images through Instagram filters. This exhibition is the first coordinated showing of this group of images.

Mediated By Glass (http://www.louhazelwood.com/project/mediated-by-glass/) is a series of self portraits taken with cameras and camera-phones using mirrors to mediate the process. Often used as experiments and fun moments this seems to be a common process in image making, a rite of technique building and looking, a way of being in the process of image making and the resulting image. This collection of images will be shown for the first time in this exhibition and will be added to throughout the show by submissions from the public via email and at workshops held at the gallery.

Lou Hazelwood is from Hull and has ran workshop every year as part of HIP Fest however this year Lou is hosting an exhibition of her own work. Lou says “I approach my work, research and curatorial practices from interests often found in the intersections of Venn Diagrams, the overlap of distinctly differing approaches or methodologies enabling me to forge new responses. I am keen to encompass many practices within my practice, often feeling like I have a chameleonic practice, I am rarely at a loss as to what to do. I am always keen to source and work within collaborations, if this is something that would interest you then do get in touch.”
