‘One Carefree Night’ (GHETTO PROM)

by Ilvy Njiokiktjien

‘One Carefree Night’ By Ilvy Njiokiktjien. HIP Photography Festival, 1st to 30th October Hull Central Library.

In the gang-ridden area Manenberg, in Cape Town, South Africa, schools are regularly forced to close down because it is too dangerous for pupils to walk to them. Most people in Manenberg never finish high school because they end up in crime. The few youngsters that do finish have one thing in mind: their senior prom. The families of the teenagers save up the whole year to be able to rent a fancy car and to buy ball gowns and tuxedos. They feel a sparkle of hope to escape their bleak reality, even if it is just for one carefree night.
