Beyond the Binary

by Geoff Brokate & Kaye Martindale

Interested in the evolving role of gender and sexuality within our culture, Geoff and Kaye sought out non-conventional families that reconfigure our ideas of how a family is made up. Beyond the Binary offers a focused look at the ways in which the traditional family model has changed in the UK to encompass same-sex couples, non-binary partnerships and transgender families.
The couple approached a selection of families across England and asked them ‘What would a typical family day involve for you?’

The photographs call on us to examine what constitutes a family and expand our understanding of the ties that bind us together. While these households may challenge our preconceptions, they also reveal the constellations of frustration, love, mundanity and quirkiness that are common to all families.
