The Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition 1st to 25th October 2016 Outside Creative & Cultural Studios in the event space, Princes Quay Hull

Hull residents and visitors to the city are being given the chance to see some of the best photography from around the world when the Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition comes to Hull in October.

The Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) features world-class images from across the globe and is being shown at Hull International Photography Festival in Princes Quay from 1st to 25th October 2016.

Photographers from 114 countries entered this year’s awards and the winning images give a beautiful, fascinating, entertaining and, at times, moving, depiction of life, cultures, wildlife and landscape across the planet.

From atmospheric pictures of Louisiana wetlands, quirky portraits of pelicans off the coast of Namibia, delicate, close-up semi-abstracts of dew-covered spiders’ webs and a charming shot of a rather quizzical meerkat to insightful images of the Basotho people in Lesotho, the Kazakh wedding season in Mongolia and street life in China, the exhibited photographs cover a wide range of styles and subjects, all captured by immensely talented photographers, young and old, from around the world.

Alan Raw, Creative Director of HIP Photography Festival and Curator of HIP Gallery said: “We are very proud to be able to partner with Travel Photographer of The Year for Hull International Photography Festival this year, & again in 2017 with support from Hull 2017. After the great success of last year, HIP Photography Festival has become the perfect host for this prestigious exhibition.”

Martin Green, CEO and Director of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, said: “With photographs from around the world and Hull’s heritage as an international gateway, it seems highly appropriate to host Travel Photographer of the Year in this city. It promises to be a fascinating exhibition that I hope will attract Hull residents and visitors alike.”

Travel Photographer of the Year was founded in 2003. Entries are accepted from amateur, semi-pro and professional photographers of all ages and from all countries. There are special categories for young photographers, for those wishing to make a career out of photography, for images shot on a smartphone or tablet and for short travel films. To date, the oldest entrant has been 88 years old, the youngest just five.

Over the years, Travel Photographer of the Year has exhibited at the British Airways London Eye on London’s South Bank, at the Royal Geographical Society in London and at the ‘Birthplace of Photography’ the National Trust’s Lacock Abbey.

The winning images from the awards are also published in the ‘Journey’ series of books, and selected images are also available as greetings cards, postcards or prints. A selection of these will be available from Creative & Cultural Studios, next-door to HIP Gallery, Harbour Deck, Princes Quay, during the festival.
